Social isolation is a problem in rural areas—but less so in our area thanks to Tele-Drive Albert County. For a low cost, anyone in the county can be picked up from their house, driven to wherever they need to go, and taken back home again. The result? Seniors who lose their licenses or can’t afford cars are able to live in their own homes longer—Tele-Drive will take them to medical appointments, the grocery store and even social events. Parents can take their children to the doctor, to early literacy programs, to the library and more.

![]() by Elaine Demaline Huh? What is this? I remember some curly-haired dude 30 years ago on television doing some funky work-out moves....but here in Albert County now? Seriously? What's this all about? It's so easy, just dust off your old Walkman, put in some 80’s Dance Music, throw on those oversized earphones and head outside. This is the start of your 20-minute workout. Intrigued? Oh, and you’ll need a few more items to make this work: a garbage bag or two and some gloves. ![]() The Bennett and Albert County Health Care (BACH) Foundation is a charitable organization that provides funds for the Albert County Health and Wellness Centre and many community initiatives including Sistema-Hillsborough, Tele-Drive, Literacy Express, the Imagination Library, spin bikes in classrooms and Connecting Albert County. by Lynne Greenblatt

A lot of this is knowledge, and that’s where education comes in.” Shelley Jones is an Outreach Diabetes Case Manager with Horizon Health. She meets with patients at the Albert County Health and Wellness Centre once a month. ![]() By Jennifer Shelby There’s a point, deep in the isolation of a storm-heavy winter, when the toys have all been played with, the books have all been read, and the movies have all been watched. Coffee isn’t enough to keep a parent going anymore. The kids have eaten all the leftover Christmas chocolate, discovered where we hid the permanent markers, and are redoing the living room walls with a series of sloppy stick figures. You need to get out of the house and so do the kids. This year, Tele-Drive is making it easy. In partnership with Education and Early Childhood Development - Government of New Brunswick - NB Literacy Strategy, from Jan 24th to March 31st, 2018 they will drive you and your children to the library and any early literacy event in Albert County for the low, low price of free. This includes Literacy Express in Hillsborough and the new Parent-Child Mother Goose Program in Riverside-Albert. Catch a ride to the Hillsborough Library to stock on books and movies, or to attend Storytime and Babies in the Library with other families and have fun. ![]() Songs and rhymes for young children have been passed down for generations. Such nursery rhymes and songs are a fun way to teach children to talk and to get ready to read. Sharing rhymes and finger plays also provide a nurturing experience between caregiver and child. Registered dietitians can help you navigate through nutrition information and provide sound, safe and personalized nutrition advice. Who are dietitians? Registered dietitians are health professionals who have a university degree from an accredited university program and hundreds of hours of supervised training. They are regulated nutrition health professionals, meaning they are accountable to a regulatory body and have to keep their skills up-to-date. They use the best available scientific evidence to provide guidance and recommendations to clients or communities according to their unique values and circumstances. ![]() By Joseph Gallant Since the first kilometre was travelled in 2013, Tele-Drive Albert County has offered a door-to-door driving service to those who need help getting where they need to go. Most trips have been for medical appointments, but people have also received rides for banking or shopping, as well as social gatherings. In 2016 alone, we provided 484 rides, travelled 18,124 km, and volunteers gave 1435 hours of their time to this great organization! There is an expression that “it takes a village to raise a child.” In our area, it takes a county to keep a person healthy.
Health and wellness is a community issue. No longer is health defined as simply the absence of disease or injury. Likewise, healthcare has evolved in the recognition that many factors affect health. For example, a person with limited reading skills might not be able to understand the labels on a medicine bottle or be able to read recipes for healthy meals. A person without a car might not have access to grocery stores or medical appointments. A person who is isolated lacks the social network that is critical to a healthy lifestyle. ![]() June 17th marks the date of the 3rd Annual Bennett and Albert County Health Care (BACH) Foundation Golf Tournament. The focus of the day is “fun, friendship and charity,” according to Bob Rochon. Bob is a member of the BACH Board of Directors. The tournament is a four-person scramble. In each team, all four players hit off the tee. The team then picks which ball to use for the next shot. The result is a focus on fun more than competition. As Bob says, “You don’t need to be a good golfer to enjoy a scramble, and on a par-3, anything is possible. With a bit of luck, even a mediocre golfer can do well.” ![]() By Vickey Bell After participating in a relaxing yoga presentation by Jo-Ann Brine (Willow Yoga) during a Writer's Workshop taught by Deborah Carr at Forest Dale Home Inc., I renewed an appreciation for the benefits of this gentle form of exercise.
